Radio's Gone

Take me by boots
Or take me by plane
What’s in the water
By Lake Pontchartrain?
My old America
Gold in its youth
Gunned down on Fridays
By John Wilkes Booth
Safe in the schoolhouse
Not safe in the yard
Wander like cowboys
End up at the bar
Speak like a Frenchman
You lose your respect
Take away, son
And you know what you’ll get

Yell in the mornings
It’s just what you need
To fry back your earlobes
From justice diseased
I’ll throw away my life
If you throw away yours
Let’s go get lost
Out on Emily’s moors
Guiled by the watchman
And stole by the clock
Warped like a werewolf
Who’s stuck in the pot
German directions
To occupied France
Jewel king collections
A marvelous dance

Hey, what’s that you say?
Radio’s gone for the day

Take back the teachers
And beats like the praise
Walk on the plank that’s
The cat’s favorite place
Think like a Martian
They’ve invaded us once
Hats on your guns
There’s a reason we won
Castles in whiskey
And sand in the sky
Halting like grenadiers
We hang our July’s
Takeout Chinese food
And Facebook’s our lives
It’s no mistake
We’ve done said our goodbyes

Tomorrow is a Drag, Man

I didn't write this, but God, how I love it. The poem is from a 1958 film called High School Confidential (which I have not seen because I have been unable to track down a copy, physical or digital), and has a debatable title. Check out the video of its recitation here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzywcEgjlhw.

Tomorrow is a Drag, Man

My old man was a bread stasher all his life
He never got fast
He wound up with a used car
A 17-inch screen
And arthritis
Tomorrow is a drag, man
Tomorrow is a king-sized bust

They cry, “Put down pot; don’t think a lot.”
For what?
Time? How much and what to do with it?
Sleep, man, and you might wake up
Digging the whole human race
Giving itself three days to get out
Tomorrow is a drag, Pops
The future is a flake

I had a canary who couldn’t sing
I had a cat that let me share my pad with her
I bought a dog that killed the cat that ate the canary
What is truth?

I had an uncle with an Ivy League heart
He had life with a belt in the back
He had a button-down brain
Wind-up, a belt in the mouth
And a button-down lip

We cough blood on this earth
Now there’s a race for space
We can cough blood on the moon soon
Tomorrow is Dragsville, cats
Tomorrow is a king-sized drag

Tool a fast shore, swing with a gassy chick
Turn on to a thousand joys
Smile on what happened
Or check what’s going to happen
You’ll miss what’s happening
Turn your eyes inside and dig the vacuum
Tomorrow?
Drag

Sunrise in New Orleans

Sunrise in New Orleans
I’m hungry but not without pity
For more than just the birds
That sound like bats in their vaginal
V-shape formation
I sing songs, too, but they sound
Less like laments and more like
Leaves
Leaving homes and hellos
And sacred hallow coastal cities of dreams
I miss a face
So nearly betrayed by these
Wild ways we live
She paints
I write
And like chimneys in a storm
We weather the beating winds
Of long-distance love and
Remembered laughter
We languish, still, in the moonset
Of another day in our separate ways
Basking silently in the sun soon to come
Again

Quiet streets in the ghost town are
Punctuated seldomly by lost headlights
This mist rises
Into the dawning heat
The rays of an old friend often forgotten
In my introverted calendar cycle
Leaning toward inspiration
I have a family, too
And they are not far from here
The moon is blotted out by clouds
And the sun begins his round

I worked for two hours in a café
With ungloved unclean hands
Swatting cockroaches away from
Cheese and shrimp grits
She forgot to salt them
But they will be served anyway
During this southern sunrise scoped through
Maze of telephone wires and poles that
Blend with the trees
Spanish Moss hanging good morning
On lonely branches
I think it would be nice to have skill enough
To sketch so in-motion a subject as
The travelling impressionist clouds
My stomach is aching
I should eat
Or sleep
Again

The Kitchen at Joliet House

There are creatures in the oven
Creatures in the oven
There are creatures in the oven
And they want to sing a song
Watch a movie
Write a novel
Go turn all the lights on
Creatures in the oven
In the night are here
And then they're gone

Halloween is a Cartoon in New Orleans

Cities in America are lonely; the lonelier, the wilder. Only by grace are we kept safe in the dark, when the city and its animals want to eat us alive and show off the leftover pieces of broken boys and girls.
I had to retreat to a solitary corner of the bar, and with shades on, I watched the sun go down in New Orleans on Halloween. I probably looked so unhappy over there in that corner, slammed against wall all by myself, and that’s okay with me. I had my Anchor Steam, my leather jacket on, 27s in my pocket, and I was seeing that bar with the eyes I was born with. I’d been absolutely mad for the previous two weeks, and I could finally see straight. I was the writer, the stranger that no one likes, and I prefer it that way. I looked left and saw your face, I lit a cigarette and I felt your hair in my fingers. When my boots touched the floor, I was on a rocky hill with you, overlooking cities or wilderness. I closed my eyes and we were together, and I was a man again. I could breathe, and I was tired of being mad.
They were all just people to me again, and not just targets for rebuke or judgement or lust. I was outside of all this – finally! – and they did not understand how cartoonish they were. It was time to turn these notebooks into the novel they were born to be and quit fucking around.
What was this? Could it be passion? For love and for art? I wanted to love you like you’d never been loved. I wanted another chance to draw your incredible body.

Simon introduced me to a girl he liked that was dressed as a pirate. He had all these great stories of beautiful women whose clothes melted off in his presence, and she was one of them. I was unimpressed. When she first walked up, I closed my notebook.
“Oh, come on. Don’t act like you’re doing anything important,” she said. People really hate those little black books. I told her I was a writer, and in spite of her previous attack, she claimed she was, too – just like everyone else. I asked her if she wrote fiction, and she told me she wrote funny, intelligent comics.
“Like, why doesn’t Jesus eat M&Ms?”
“Because of the holes in his hands?”
                She was suddenly crestfallen.
“Nobody’s ever gotten that before.” So she changed the subject. “Aren’t you hot in that jacket?” she asked.  And despite the overwhelming desire to give a snarky “yes,” (who doesn’t want to be hot in a leather jacket?) I decided to go with the truth. It’s my new thing.
“No, I’m pretty used to wearing this jacket.”
She looked at me quizzically, or maybe it was just drunkenly in her nerdy faux-hot sort of way. So I clarified.
“I’m not in costume. This is my jacket. I wear it all the time.” I felt suddenly and ridiculously like a Marine (this is my rifle).
“Oh. I thought you were supposed to be a biker, or,” she mocked my big, slick unkempt hair, “a greaser.” Everybody thinks you’re trying to be somebody else. And in my case, they choose to assume this truth every single day.
                “No, this is just me.”
And immediately, in her eyes, I became strange. It’s not that painful to be an artist in a current American metropolis, but God, it can be obnoxious sometimes. Normal folks still hate it. I wonder if people have actually evolved, or if it’s just the posters on their walls that they fantasize about that check and reshape their immediate vocal reactions to the whole idea.
Either way, she took Simon outside, and I was relegated to third wheel status. No matter. I had just reaffirmed my faith in humanity. Why not have it tested within moments? I was sure she was a sweet girl. But hiding a band kid underneath a piratesse’s bustier doesn’t erase years spent on a clarinet. I’ll bet she was good, too, on the clarinet.
Anyway, none of it mattered. I was still drinking Anchor. I was in my comfort zone, comfortably missing the city I was supposed to be writing about. But my muscles hurt; I literally ached from days of drinking and emotional drain, and I was ready to get back to my square yard of floor and put pen to paper, or fingers to keys. I was just writing a book full of ashes, but they were ashes I carried reverently in my internal urn. And if that terrible band could keep playing the same songs, then I was fully allowed to keep splitting open and describing my terrible life. And even as awful as those songs were, and as much as the crowd hated them the first time, as awkwardly as they looked at me as the only soul applauding the first set; the longer they stayed, the more multi-colored Halloween they drank, and the looser their silly costumes (actual costumes) became, the more they loved them. And Christ, did they love them by 2AM. You should have seen them dance to Shit: Take 3.
I’d smoked half a pack of cigarettes, but I felt quite confident that my cool was intact. I was at the point of rolling my eyes dramatically – even to myself. And by the second time I had to sit through the most bloodless “I Put a Spell on You,” I didn’t even want to smoke and look interesting, hunched black over notebook, anymore it was so ridiculous. Halloween is a cartoon in New Orleans.
Honestly, could this be passion rekindled? And yeah, I was sweating to death in that jacket, costume or not.

Beat Eve in New Orleans

I’m curled up on the floor of some little shotgun flat in New Orleans, feeling beat as fuck. Miles Davis is blowing hauntingly through the soft room, and some wild visions of a silver vapor woman dance before my aching eyes. She’s singing that she’s too wonderful to die. A train horn blows deep and sad in the distant sweaty cool night. Did that train come from Texas? I feel like it might have. I’m here to write, I remember, and put fingers to keys, hoping that gone Italian chick in the city of dreams doesn’t forget me.

God I can’t wait to get back and kiss the earth of that wonderful place.

That's him. He likes to blow his smoke in the countless eyes of polluted pink sunsets, and clouds. And stomp on the leaves of the Fall that won't seem to come but might come too soon. He's all embarcaderos and rodeos in the city of cities where leaving is a way of living. Or maybe vice versa. His guitar is unplugged and his drying pen is maybe not so dry. No matter what, the collar's up, and he's still howling into the wind.
Even silently.
Especially, in fact.

Cheap Chinese in North Beach

Steaming roll of San Francisco soul
Cheap and common, easy breezy, it's
Becoming
Lazy in my fattishness, complacent
In my ease
It's time to return to the places
I've never been
The plastic rose in the long lapel of
The road smells sweetly of limousines
Not driving by, and my not flying
From one flat to the next at the
Behest of national media coverage
And intrinsic moral debt

It's a Chinese buffet in Texas, this
Modern country of mine, and
I'm letting my meat settle before I
Attack it again

It's Tuesday and Tuesday is like any other day except that sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s different in the way that only days full of misadventure and piteous overthrows write like a bunch of shit because everyone’s on drugs but it. I want to fuck, want to love even but don’t know if I even know how anymore. Love is such a bitch sometimes. Why throw everything away to call someone your girlfriend, just so you can feel jealous and break up and hate one another?
I’ve ditched the room. I’ve ditched the people in it. I’ve come back into my space of Darkhouse, my little space. I’ve come back to la Sanctuaire d’Arco. Everyone in the living room is drinking stupid fine wine given by the homosexual, chewing on pretty cheeses fed them by the folks with money and nothing to lose. Except they’re constantly losing their souls, handing them out for candy and coke and sex and dirt. I feel such an intense anger right now. This is the time I want to get away. I want to get away from them. From it all. I just want to drink and fuck but the girl is on pills with the rest of them and she only wants to hang out and film them making asses of themselves. I’m so not interested. I’m so not a part of this. I brought her the drink she loves the most, bought a bottle of whiskey, for far too much, and came in happy that it wasn’t total Darkhouse, but found a party of misfits in the full swing of ridiculousness. When did she become a part of this? Why is she on all of them? Why am I in my room, depressing myself with these ridiculous words that I know are ridiculous, that I know will do nothing but soften my penis and make me upset?
I’ve just written three-hundred words about nothing, just so I could get out of the room. Now everyone’s home, and I wish I didn’t have to go back in there. But there is something, someone in there that draws me. I’m in love with her, I do love her truly, but I thought we were outside of all this. I didn’t want someone who would just join in on the drugs and the stupidity and the fruitlessness of every wasted night. What a waste! God, it angers me so much. We’re up to four-hundred now. It’s just volume and stupid laughs in there. It’s just bad television and prescription drugs. I’m drinking too but it’s different. Or maybe I just tell myself that. Maybe I’m just only happy when I’m the center of attention, of her attention. Of her intentions.
All I’ve thought about all day is that she was sitting at home in her little garage room, painting and sewing, or one or the other, and that I wanted to be sitting with her, silently, working on my novel in the beauty of our silent artistic room. Then there would be love talk, touch, sex, more love talk then morning and work. Maybe even more sex. She’d have an orgasm. I would too. Instead I’m listening to her act like them and it is truly bothering me.
Five-hundred and forty-four words in, nothing changes. Even the repetitive type and clack and clack and type on keys stuck with cum and food and old coffee says the same thing over and over again. What am I doing? Why am I writing? What am I writing? Is this a waste of time? Yes, it is. I’m typing really quite hard just to get her attention. It’s not working. I have to go back in there to see her. And that’s exactly where I don’t want to be. That room is why I’m leaving the state. That room is why I changed my name back. What a waste, what a terrible waste of time! Both of us. All of us. What is this life? Six-hundred and sixty-eight.
She might as well be sleeping with them. Right now I am an afterthought. Half of me says that she is giving me my space and respecting that I’m writing, giving me my privacy to do so (even though I’m really not). The other half says that she’s bored, that she’s Michele, that she wants to be doing what I am always not doing when being myself. Yeah, so I’m not that much fun to be around. That’s who I am. That’s what I want. I want to talk about poetry and love and writing and the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and favorite days and good stories and times that are past but always with us. I want to be doing something that even if it could be considered wasting time will somehow eventually better me as a person, as an artist, as a human, maybe even just as a writer. Certainly not a lover. Certainly not a rockstar. Certainly not a party animal. Fuck all this stupid noise. It even makes my English bad, apparently. I’m a series of one-dollar words right now. Eight-hundred and fifty-six of them.
I’m a James Dean haircut with a bad attitude and soupy shit in his guts, taking a piss and thinking of these words, suddenly realizing that I’m surprisingly depressed for maybe no reason at all. What a night, what a night. This isn’t what Kerouac was writing about. This isn’t even what I want to write about, what I do write about. Like I said, it’s just writing for the sake of making noise with a keyboard and an escape from the room that I thought I had saved myself from. The room that I thought I’d found a partner in leaving. Nine-sixty-four. Almost there.
Eleven oranges sang a song to the tune of something French they heard once but couldn’t pronounce the name of. They thought about it afterward and decided what they really wanted was to be zucchini. That’s the first time I’ve ever tried to write that word and miraculously I spelled it correctly. One-thousand, one-hundred and nineteen. Why isn’t there a hyphen in the ‘teens?
Everyone’s on drugs. Everyone but me. I am miserable right now, and my lover is a part of the cause. What a pain. What a night. I’ve had enough of this. One-thousand, one-hundred and sixty-two. Now they’re smoking pot. Of course. And I’m walking back in. For absolutely no reason at all. What a night. One-thousand, one-hundred and eighty-six wasted words for wasted people.
I’m feeling vicious for no reason at all. And I can’t stay away from the keyboard. This is music, somehow. This is real love. This is the second page. I’m being dramatic. I hate this. I hate this about myself, thought I was past it, thought she was different. I know where to put the commas, Jack. That’s why I use them. And I maybe do it just to not sound like you when I write. Would you have loved the computer and its lack of need for paper exchange?
I almost went back in but suddenly knew that she was going to ask me why don’t I just stay in there and write? She wants me in here. I’m no party, and she never cums. I’ve got tears from and of smoke in my eyes. Well just one really. And I’ve stopped using my commas. Are commas and comas related? I wish this was a typewriter. That would really get her attention. Did you master typing with a cigarette in one hand, Jack? I suck at it. Am I meditating? Am I communicating with the dead? Are you dead, like Weldon Kees isn’t?
Why hasn’t she come in here yet? She must have masturbated when I was at work. I want to swallow this whole bottle at once. It cost too much and I want to prove it. There it is, now I’m a party. One-thousand, three-hundred and thirty-one useless words. Useless? Is there such a thing? The –less makes them worth something.
I’m drunk and I want to light my hands on fire. Is this depression? Is this madness? And I’m ashing on the floor to see if she notices. She won’t.

Non-intellectuals are just that. Even over martinis they huff nail polish remover and bop along to the same goofy eighties Billy Idol and '60s nuggets that they pound out every drinking night (every night) memorizing solely by repetition and soullessly sucking the night out of a bottle of something cheap-but-good because that's what people like "us" do.

Every one of them skips out on the museum morning in deference to a long night of nothing and depthless deprecating non-art. Why do they all ignore the dramatic transpirings of last night's ridiculousness? Has the drama of doomed love been stepped over so swiftly?

Quite calling me Pole, Ringo!

There is music everywhere but in my heart, and thus I mask it with gin. Three olives and twenty minutes and nothing changes but the mask I wear as I slip it from Greek tragedy to Beat broken drinking dreams to smiling digi-pop daydreams at night.

Metal hammering, tinking on computers, "Erotic City" is trying so hard to make its way into these waves. The others' love makes me a part of the other. It's all just a night of discolored discourse and off-course offerings of manly love caressing that beautiful girl just because I was there.

7.1.12

And empty poems of no more gin because the gin is gone and the cigarettes are gone and the belief in our country has all but left the sentimentality of our dreams and is now causing us to be late to work because what does it matter. Billie Holiday says, "Where has it gone?" And we wonder the same thing.

Dramatis Personae: The Mayor of Casterbridge and Jane Eyre

Often, when reading a novel, I choose to have the characters portrayed by faces and voices (actors, essentially) that I know well. I don't just go substituting any old actor/actress that I admire, tossing out the author's description of the character, though. Instead, using that description I can often find an artist physically fitting and capable of portraying them. It can be funny, too, sometimes, when I use actors from wholly separate generations in stories and scenes together.
Now, I don't do this for every novel; most of the characters are painted in my imagination by the author. But,  for instance, if it is a novel of which I have seen a film adaptation beforehand, I have many times used the actors from said film - such as with the Harry Potter series, and the Twilight Saga, Bram Stoker's Dracula, His Dark Materials, Solaris, The Lord of the Rings, etc.
Typically, when not based on a film, the novels in which this substitution of actors occurs are epic ones, the sprawling generational story in which characters appear repeatedly, usually what is now considered one of "the classics." I've only just started writing these down, as I think they are fascinating on many levels.
First, I wonder if this is some sort of accidental development in the human imagination due to over-saturation of television and films in the last couple generations. I honestly doubt anyone was doing this in the Elizabethan era - substituting their favorite stage actors for every novel they read - and am not entirely sure that I have any company at all, even today, in this regard.
Secondly, it is a tradition of mine, if I have managed to avoid it during reading, to watch a/the film adaptation of these novels immediately upon finishing them. As you can imagine, it is often very dismal work. Coming right out of these amazing worlds, replete with stunning linguistic description and in-depth character analysis, it is quite depressing to see the scrambling together a bunch of actors who seem to have not even read the source material, sit through a screen-writer's "costume drama/period piece" script who has clearly misunderstood the text, and/or to see the plot slaughtered and the entire story edited in fettering it to one specific genre. Therefore, my casting is useful also in simply saying, "These are the actors who should play your characters, if the novel was free of its time constraints and selfish, narrow-minded financial backers. Here is your perfect cast."
So, without further ado (this has become much longer than I anticipated), I offer the first of many to come: the dramatis personae of Thomas Hardy's, The Mayor of Casterbridge and Charlotte Bronte's, Jane Eyre.

A Kingdom of Souls

I

I have stood upon the rock and gnashed my teeth
Below me, a million veins pumped to
Personalized rhythms of demise

II

While hills grew up around me in rings preordained
A vision of decay was all that remained
No fire of spirit kindl’d to fight or succumb
Only my numbness withstood the heat of the sun

There are ancient mysteries, lives in these stones:
Some that I’ve loved, while others unknown
Writ in the leaves foolish fates entwined
“We are victims all of the witches of time!”

Souls meant to seek them for years soon shorn
Or others to weep ‘til blessed all distorts
Follow me not, young lovers at home,
There will always be clouds, wherever I roam

III

Creatures of habit, malice and spite
Tread far into dreams, the mission to blight
The fantasy reigns and milky moonlight
No hope here retained for those who do right

Heroes, move on, and lovers escape
Run for the dawn, where smoke is the wraith
These plums are bleeding, the insects retreating
To kingdoms they’re leading, where hearts stay beating

The world is folding beneath my heel
And yet this stone will never yield
It will stay fast to weep like the willow
For I stand upon it, and I will it so

The End of a Three-Week Binge

I need to write this down; otherwise it will not be true.

I made some honestly bad decisions this weekend. I have maybe destroyed the trust I have with one of my best friends.

I have decided that I want to fix myself. I don’t want to be like this anymore. I don’t want to find myself doing these terrible things anymore. I want to be in control. I want out of this spiral.

I had sex on Wednesday night with a random girl I had just met. We were drunk, and I actually had been laying next to her while she was sleeping before I decided to try to seduce her. But once she was awake, we ended up having drunken sex for a few hours. I didn’t wear a condom. That kind of worries me, actually. Then, like the fool I am, once she was leaving I told her something along the lines of, “As far as I’m concerned, we’re pretty much together now.” What a terrible idea. I can’t be with her. I hardly even know her! I can’t be with anyone right now, much less another raging alcoholic like myself.

After that, though, I got trashed with my bandmates at rehearsal and tried to sleep off the residual effects of whiskey and intercourse.

Then, the next day, The Revival had a show out of town. I ended up drinking far too much there because the crowd completely hated us. I’m having a hard enough time lately attempting to find what kind of music I want to play, so when everyone basically hates whatever it ends up being, it makes it truly difficult to continue. I was angry, and then I was drunk. So we took the party back to Kurt’s house and continued drinking until the beer was gone. Everyone decided to call it quits around 4:30, except for Kurt’s mother and I. She’s a really great person, who supports Kurt unequivocally and I really appreciate that for him. But, being a complete asshole, and way past drunk, I decided to pull my little seduction tactics on her. Why? Why would I ever want to do that? I haven’t the faintest possible idea. We didn’t really do anything terrible: all we did was kiss twice. It wasn’t passionate, it wasn't subversive; it was simply something for a couple of drunk idiots to do.

I woke up two hours later, having absolutely no idea where I was. It turns out I had fallen asleep in Kurt’s spare bedroom, but the guys needed to get back home. I was still residually hammered, and I was still very angry. All the whiskey and beer couldn't have pushed that rage that I was powerless against down for too long. I shouldn’t even have been so upset. Kurt and Ben couldn’t seem to figure out what was up and did their best to console me, to pacify me. I think that frustration is actually directed at myself these days. It wasn’t the crowd, it wasn’t the songs; I just don’t like the life I am leading currently.

Once Kurt was on his way into work, I asked Ben if he wanted to go get some food and coffee after we’d unloaded all the gear at the studio. He agreed, and so later we walked around Berkeley looking for a suitable restaurant. At some point, the goal had become to get drunk. We had some cheeseburgers and coffee and then went stalking around for a bar. Finding a brew pub, we sat a couple hours returning ourselves to the numbed obliviousness that we, for some reason, can’t seem to avoid. We left that bar after two beers and went to find some whiskey. We ran into an old co-worker and his friends in the street and told them what we were after. They agreed to come with us, and soon enough, we were in a pool hall with fresh whiskeys shining in our idle hands. We had several drinks there, and eventually our friends left. Ben and I stayed, shooting more pool, and ordering more beers.

Finally, we left and hopped on BART to get back into the city. On the train, we decided to go get a case of beer, a bottle of whiskey, a pack of cigarettes, and a gram of cocaine. So we got a hold of an acquaintance that delivered cocaine and got started. It was only around 6:30 in the evening. We played guitar, rambled through conversation and burned the cocaine all night long, straight into the early morning. I continued being an asshole, allowing Ben to believe more of my mythical adventures. Why I do that, I really don’t know. I always feel so guilty for being such an uncontrollable liar. I think maybe I just hate myself enough to be willing to pretend to be somebody else at all costs. At some point in these ridiculous conversations, I told Ben he could be the lead singer and frontman of The Revival. What madness! There’s no possible way I would ever allow anyone to steal my glory like that. But, nevertheless, I spent hours convincing him that this is what I wanted to do. The instant the cocaine started to wear off around 8 AM, I started trying to backpedal. I’m not sure if right now he understands that it was all a load of drug-induced nonsense. He’s such a trusting person that he foolishly believes everything I say. I’m such a terrible person sometimes.

Once he decided he wanted to go to bed (good luck with that), I knew I couldn’t stay there so I just left, and shambled my way to the BART station. It felt like every single eye was fixed on me, like every passerby knew that I was fucked up and hated myself for it. I made it onto the train and found my way back home to try to sleep it off. In only a couple hours’ time, it was obvious that I was in for a horrible day.

The cocaine is still pounding through my body, torturing me; the whiskey is still swimming around in my head, dizzying me. I haven’t eaten in well over 36 hours. My hands are shaking rather violently. I can hardly stand when I need to go to the bathroom. I’m having anxiety attacks every few hours when I wake up, memories of the past several nights’ worthless, raging, savagely self-destructive exploits screaming through my head like a burning train conducted by a frantic banshee. I want to quit. I don’t want to do this anymore, but I almost know that I fear I cannot. The terrifying possibility that this is who I am – an untrustworthy, vicious liar and drug addict – is nearly overwhelming me. I don’t want to do this anymore. I want to be a good person, but I don’t even really know what that is.

Working Class Bohemians?

I have just made a surprising and jarring discovery about what it means to be a bohemian in the traditional and modern sense. Upon completing a survey just now that was to determine how much I valued my extrinsic goals versus intrinsic goals, I have been made aware that I value social recognition, financial success, and attractiveness much more than the average person in comparison with affiliation, community involvement, and self-acceptance.
The fine print basically told me that I am a victim of the pressures that a self-serving society imposes on its luckless inhabitants, that I am far too interested in satisfying others’ view of myself than my own.
This is a startling development for several reasons. First of all, I’ve always prided myself on being specifically independent: I’ve moved where and when I wanted, I’ve left home by choice, and left comfort zones by choice on more than one occasion. I’ve declared my ambition to successfully establish myself in the professional art world as my only ambition, and am currently working toward that goal.
Also, I believe that my whole life has been in the pursuit of self-acceptance, -understanding, and -love. I find that no one understands me the way I do, therefore I don’t really need them to accept me; though I easily admit that I do place an extremely high value on social recognition. Without the recognition of countless unknown people, how can I be sure that I’ve effectively accomplished my goal of success? Recognition is required in order to validate my life’s work.
But the most terrifying of all these realizations is that I, apparently, in an effort to become and remain as faithfully bohemian as one could ever be, am completely the opposite of the definition of “bohemian.” A bohemian condemns accepted social goals, could maintain a happy and penniless existence as long as it was in the vein of what they love to do. They could be living on the street or in a commune, as long as they didn’t have to participate in the struggle to become like everyone else. They pride themselves on being so different, that the current social climate is far behind them and undeserving of his or her attention.
But then, as I think on this, I start to wonder: Are these not the goals of the traditional blue-collar class? Is not the desire to eventually have achieved a life of successful work, without need of recognition or attractiveness, surrounded and known by only those who one truly loves and is loved by the desire of the typical working Joe?
Where and when did this distinction occur? I have never felt less bohemian in my entire life, let alone so confused that the working class hero is more of the true and free soul than I. Am I really only a slave to social acceptance? Is my desire to finally achieve the end-goal of financial conquest and a face, personality, and occupation that others can only dream of envying really just my attempt to become normal? Is that really what “normal” people want? Did the bohemians of old really not care for success?
I find myself entirely confused by this turn of events, or at least, turn of phrases. I am beginning to question my motivations. Am I both, perhaps? Or neither?
